Insider claims comments about Queen Camilla pushed the King to act
A royal insider has shed light on what prompted King Charles to ask Harry and Meghan Markle to leave Frogmore Cottage, saying the decision came soon after the release of Spare. The memoir included pointed criticism of Queen Camilla, which reportedly struck a nerve with the King.
The book mentioned Camilla more than sixty times and painted her in an unflattering way, even calling her a “wicked stepmother.” According to a report in The Express, advisers highlighted the most troubling sections to Charles shortly after publication in January 2023. Within days, he decided to act.
The insider said the remarks were viewed as a clear step too far. They described it as the final straw, noting that Harry knew Camilla was a sensitive subject for his father yet made the comments anyway. The King was said to feel that the book crossed a line and showed a lack of respect.
Harry’s memoir also revisited the period before Camilla married Charles, recalling how he and his brother once asked their father not to go through with the wedding. He wrote about his mixed feelings toward gaining a step parent and suggested he felt she had used him to shape her public image.
The cumulative effect of these passages is said to have convinced Charles to end the couple’s lease at Frogmore Cottage, marking a turning point in their relationship with the royal household.
