Leaves Princess Anne and Catherine behind as first royal and first woman to receive Vice Admiral honor
Queen Camilla has been awarded a historic new title, becoming both the first woman and the first member of the royal family to be named Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom—setting her apart from Princess Anne and Catherine in royal military honors.
The announcement comes ahead of the Queen’s upcoming visit to the Devonport naval base in Plymouth, where she will join the ship’s company of HMS Astute to commemorate the end of the submarine’s groundbreaking 15-year first commission.
Queen Camilla has maintained a long-standing connection with HMS Astute, having served as the vessel’s Lady Sponsor since her naming ceremony in 2007. Her dedication over the years has earned her the respect and admiration of senior naval figures.
The First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, praised the Queen’s appointment, expressing confidence that her new role will deepen her relationship with the Royal Navy.
HMS Astute’s Commanding Officer, Commander Christopher Bate, echoed the sentiment, saying, “She has consistently shown a deep commitment to all aspects of our work. It is a proud and memorable moment to welcome Her Majesty aboard and for her to meet our families as we mark the end of our first commission.”
As Queen Camilla steps into this historic position, the milestone further solidifies her evolving role within the monarchy—one that is increasingly active, visible, and grounded in service.
