Future King distances himself from scandal in effort to uphold royal integrity
Prince William has taken swift action to shield his reputation and the credibility of the monarchy, following reports that a major donor to one of his charities was involved in a potential “cash for access” scheme.
The Prince of Wales moved quickly after learning that Minerva Mondejar Steiner—a millionaire donor linked to his charitable foundation—had reportedly issued “strictly private and confidential” invitations offering exclusive access to royal engagements for £20,000, according to The Sun. The invites were allegedly sent to members of a high-end travel and lifestyle community, raising concerns over impropriety.
Rather than allow the situation to escalate, Kensington Palace promptly cut all ties with the donor. The move is being seen as a deliberate effort by William to avoid the kind of controversy that once surrounded King Charles during his time as Prince of Wales.
Back in 2022, The Sunday Times reported that Charles had accepted bags containing millions of euros in cash during meetings with a senior Qatari politician. Though the funds were intended for charitable work and no wrongdoing was proven, the situation prompted widespread criticism and an investigation into royal fundraising practices.
Learning from that episode, William has demonstrated a more immediate and uncompromising response. Royal Editor Matt Wilkinson noted, “The minute William heard about this, they axed that donor. The royal family have had a history of problems.”
Royal commentator Phil Dampier added that William’s urgency reflects his desire to maintain a clean image. “He didn’t want to be tainted by that and so he acted immediately,” Dampier said. “Cash-for-access is the worst thing royals can be accused of.”
He also emphasised the need for vigilance going forward: “People around him have got to be more careful in future as to who they associate with and what they get involved with.”
Journalist Esther Krakue praised William’s awareness of public sentiment, stating that he is “in tune” with the mood of the nation. “His first priority is the public—not keeping friends in high places happy,” she said. “He’s displaying the kind of leadership that resonates with people, steering clear of the sleazy politician image.”
