Prince William Always Had Suspicions About Meghan’s Motives

Royal insiders claim William believed Meghan saw Harry as a path to fame—not family

From the earliest days of Harry and Meghan’s relationship, Prince William reportedly harboured doubts about Meghan Markle’s true intentions—suspicions that may have deepened the growing rift between the royal brothers.

According to biographer Sally Bedell Smith, who shared insights on her Substack, Lady Elizabeth Anson—a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II—had voiced concerns before the couple’s 2018 wedding. Her unease about Meghan’s motives has now been echoed by Prince William himself, as reported by the Daily Express.

Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive Show, royal commentator Phil Dampier explained that William had reservations about Meghan long before the couple stepped away from royal duties.

ā€œI’ve believed for years that Meghan never truly planned to embrace life within the Royal Family,ā€ Dampier said. ā€œShe saw her marriage to Harry as a stepping stone to greater fame and fortune. That’s what Prince William feared from the beginning, and it ultimately contributed to the fallout between them.ā€

He pointed to Lady Elizabeth Anson’s remarks as telling evidence, suggesting that the Queen’s inner circle had also sensed trouble early on.

Royal commentator Esther Okraku weighed in further, saying the couple’s relationship may have suffered under the weight of cultural differences and unmet expectations.

ā€œMeghan thought she was marrying into a world of billionaire luxury but instead found herself in a royal system with financial and status limitations,ā€ Okraku said.

The claims add another layer to the ongoing narrative surrounding Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal life—and the fractures it left behind.
