Prince William and Princess Catherine Escape Hosepipe Ban as King Charles Confronts Garden Restrictions

New water restrictions hit royal estates as monarch prepares to adapt with sustainable solutions

A new hosepipe ban set to take effect on July 22 will impact parts of southern England — including royal properties belonging to King Charles and Queen Camilla — while sparing Prince William and Princess Catherine’s Windsor residence.

Thames Water announced the ban due to unusually low rainfall and increased demand across Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Wiltshire. This includes the King’s beloved Highgrove Estate and Queen Camilla’s Ray Mill House near Chippenham. Under the restrictions, the use of hosepipes for watering gardens, washing vehicles, and filling paddling pools will be temporarily banned. Violations could incur fines of up to £1,000.

A Thames Water spokesperson confirmed the ban covers postcodes beginning with OX, GL, SN, RG4, RG8, and RG9 — all of which affect the countryside homes of the monarch and Queen.

Meanwhile, Prince William and Princess Catherine have avoided the ban for now. While Berkshire is among the affected counties, their Adelaide Cottage postcode (SL) lies just outside the current restriction zone.

Still, King Charles is no stranger to environmental challenges. Known for his long-standing eco-conscious practices, the monarch is expected to rely on sustainable solutions like rainwater harvesting and manual watering to maintain his cherished gardens during the dry spell.

Local residents near the royal estates are already adopting similar measures. “We’ve always had three water barrels to collect rain,” said 71-year-old Joanne Macleod, a neighbour of Ray Mill House. “We’ll keep using that water in cans until it runs out. It’s all about conserving what we can.”

While the restrictions may disrupt daily routines, they highlight the shared responsibility across all walks of life — including royalty — in adapting to growing environmental pressures.
