Prince Harry Reunites with Family as Palace Shares Swan Upping Video

King Charles honors ancient royal tradition amid Duke of Sussex’s
emotional return

Buckingham Palace has released a striking new video celebrating the conclusion
of this year’s Swan Upping—an age-old royal tradition—just as Prince Harry
makes headlines for his emotional return to family following a landmark trip
to Angola.

The video, shared on the royal family’s official Instagram account, offered a
glimpse into the 900-year-old tradition that dates back to the 12th century.
Each year, ceremonially dressed teams of rowers travel along the River Thames
to conduct a census and health check of the swan population.

“Today marks the conclusion of this year’s Swan Upping!” read the caption.

The Palace’s statement continued:

“The annual tradition records the census and health of the swan population on
the River Thames. The Swan Uppers weigh and measure the cygnets and check them
for any signs of injury—and, having caught the attention of young passersby,
are always happy to explain their work!”

This year’s count found only 86 young swans, a 45% decline compared to two
years ago. The drop, according to David Barber, the King’s official Swan
Marker, is largely attributed to outbreaks of Avian Influenza. “Fortunately,
there has been a decrease in reported cases of the disease in the River Thames
area in recent months,” Barber added.

Dressed in traditional red uniforms, the Swan Uppers weigh, measure, and
assess the health of both cygnets and adults as part of their role in
preserving the Crown’s symbolic connection to the mute swan population.

The release of the video coincides with Prince Harry’s return to the royal
spotlight following his impactful visit to Angola. During his trip, the Duke
of Sussex paid tribute to his late mother Princess Diana’s legacy by
supporting The HALO Trust’s ongoing efforts to clear landmines.

A statement on the Sussexes’ website reflected on the emotional journey:

“Nearly three decades after Diana, Princess of Wales, brought global attention
to the dangers of landmines, Prince Harry walked in her footsteps—and
alongside Angola’s leaders—to support the country’s efforts to clear the final
remnants of war.”

As King Charles continues to uphold ancient royal traditions and Prince Harry
carries forward his mother’s humanitarian legacy, both men are making
statements—one steeped in history, the other rooted in global impact.
