Monarch’s emotional reaction to past heartbreak resurfaces in new documentary
King Charles was reportedly left devastated after receiving a heartbreaking letter during his time in the Royal Navy, revealing the engagement of Camilla to Andrew Parker Bowles—a moment that turned his world “upside down.”
The emotional revelation is featured in the new Channel 5 documentary Charles and Camilla: 20 Years Married – A Royal Love Story, which explores the early days of their complicated relationship, as reported by The Mirror.
At the time, Charles was stationed away at sea when the news reached him via letter. According to sources, the future monarch took “urgent action” upon reading it and was described as “absolutely devastated, heartbroken.”
Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl shared that Charles “wrote to Camilla and pleaded with her to reconsider,” but added, “I think by this point, it was just too late.”
Royal biographer Penny Junor added further emotional context, saying, “She was, I think, his first real love, and when you fall first, sometimes you fall hardest.”
Despite the heartbreak of the past, Charles and Camilla eventually found their way back to one another, marrying in 2005. The couple is set to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary next week.
