Catherine Pays Tribute to King Charles at State Banquet

Princess of Wales debuts King’s Family Order as she returns to royal spotlight in striking red gown

Catherine made a graceful return to the royal spotlight on July 8, attending the State Banquet held in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. It marked her first appearance at such an event since beginning cancer treatment—and she used the occasion to pay a subtle but meaningful tribute to her father-in-law, King Charles.

Dressed in a striking red gown and wearing a sparkling tiara once worn by the late Princess Diana, the Princess of Wales drew admiration from royal watchers. However, it was a rarely seen accessory that held special significance: the Royal Family Order of King Charles III.

Catherine wore the miniature portrait of the King pinned just above the Royal Family Order of the late Queen Elizabeth II—a detail that didn’t go unnoticed. It marked her first public appearance wearing the King’s personal honor, a gesture seen as a sign of deep respect and familial loyalty.

Queen Camilla was the first female royal to wear the King’s Family Order during a state visit to Japan in June 2024 and again at the recent banquet for the French President.

The long-standing tradition of Family Orders dates back more than 200 years. According to Buckingham Palace, it was introduced by King George IV and continued by monarchs including Queen Victoria, King George V, and Queen Elizabeth II. The honor is personally bestowed by the sovereign to female members of the royal family.

Catherine’s appearance—along with her quiet tribute to the King—has been widely seen as a poignant moment, reflecting her ongoing dedication to the royal family despite personal health challenges.
