Clarence House reception honors visiting Commonwealth squad despite
dramatic Test defeat
King Charles III extended a warm royal welcome to the India Men’s Test Cricket
Team at Clarence House this week, following their narrow defeat to England in
a tense third Test at Lord’s.
The visit came just days after England secured a dramatic 22-run win, thanks
in large part to a match-winning spell by captain Ben Stokes. Despite the
loss, the Indian players were received with respect and enthusiasm by the
monarch, who hosted the reception in his role as Head of the Commonwealth.
Held in the gardens of the royal residence, the event continues King Charles’s
tradition of honoring visiting cricket teams from Commonwealth nations during
their UK tours.
The gripping Test match was a battle of nerves, with England defending a
modest 193-run target. India, needing 23 runs with three wickets in hand at
the start of the final day, faltered under pressure. Stokes took three crucial
wickets, while Jofra Archer’s fiery pace rattled the visitors.
India’s hopes began to unravel early, with Washington Sundar—who had
confidently predicted victory the previous evening—falling to a spectacular
return catch by Archer in a dramatic moment that turned the tide firmly in
England’s favor.
Although the result did not go their way, the Indian team’s royal reception
underscored the spirit of sportsmanship and the enduring bond between the
