William and Catherine’s eldest son set to inherit historic roles in royal succession
Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William and Catherine, is already being prepared for the weighty responsibilities that come with his position as second in line to the British throne. As the royal family plans for the future, George is expected to inherit two of the monarchy’s most significant titles.
William, who currently holds the title of Prince of Wales, received it shortly after King Charles ascended the throne following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. In line with royal tradition dating back to the 1300s, the title is reserved for the monarch’s direct heir—and George will be no exception.
The young royal, who turns 12 this month, is expected to be named Prince of Wales almost immediately after William becomes King, without waiting for the formal Coronation. The transfer of the title is typically swift and symbolic, underscoring the continuity of the monarchy.
A similar process applies to the Duchy of Cornwall. Created by Edward III in 1337 to support his son and heir, Prince Edward—later known as the Black Prince—the estate has since been passed down through generations of royal heirs. Prince William currently oversees the Duchy, and it is widely anticipated that George will eventually assume the role of Duke of Cornwall as well.
However, unlike the Prince of Wales title, the Duchy is expected to be formally transferred following the Coronation ceremony, in keeping with longstanding protocol.
As the next generation of royals steps into view, preparations continue to ensure that Prince George is ready for the future that awaits him at the heart of the monarchy.
