Monarch to Deliver Throne Speech in First Visit to Canada as Sovereign
Buckingham Palace has released a nostalgic glimpse into the past ahead of King
Charles and Queen Camilla’s landmark visit to Canada, which begins on 26 May.
The Palace shared rare photos of a youthful Charles during his first Canadian
tour in 1970, when he was just 21 and joined Queen Elizabeth II, Prince
Philip, and Princess Anne for the centennial celebrations of Manitoba and the
Northwest Territories.
In the images, Charles is seen visiting Ottawa, meeting dignitaries, and
participating in the Commonwealth Baton Relay — a moment the Palace described
as part of a “celebration of Canada’s centennials.”
Now preparing for his 20th official visit, Charles will arrive as King for the
first time. The two-day itinerary includes a cultural event, a meeting with
Governor General Mary Simon and Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the formal
swearing-in of Queen Camilla as a member of the Canadian Privy Council.
The couple will also revisit Rideau Hall to plant trees at the same location
they visited in 2017. On the second day, the King will deliver the Speech from
the Throne at the State Opening of Parliament — only the third time in
Canadian history a reigning monarch has done so.
Their trip will conclude with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the National
War Memorial to honour fallen soldiers.
