Princess’s brother opens up about family struggles and Prince William’s
quiet strength during cancer fight
James Middleton has shared a touching and sombre insight into his sister
Catherine’s difficult journey, highlighting the emotional toll her cancer
diagnosis had on both the Middleton and Wales families.
Speaking candidly to The Times, James reflected on the painful months
following the Princess of Wales’ announcement in March 2024 that she was
undergoing treatment for cancer. “For her and her family it was a challenging
time,” he said. “And I know for us and our bigger family it was a challenging
time, but I think it’s about communication and offering support and help where
you can.”
He praised Prince William for his steadfast presence during Catherine’s
treatment, calling emotional support the most vital act during such times.
“Being there for someone is such an important part, and it doesn’t necessarily
have to be on your terms—and it shouldn’t be on your terms,” he added.
Catherine’s diagnosis came as a shock to the nation. After months of
preventative chemotherapy and a break from public duties, she revealed in
January 2025 that she was in remission.
Throughout the ordeal, William described the experience as “brutal,” yet
remained devoted to his wife, a commitment echoed in James’s tribute to the
power of family in times of crisis.
