Royal couple becomes punchline in Weekend Update following explosive
interview and legal defeat
Saturday Night Live took aim at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just days after
the Duke’s highly publicized BBC interview and his failed legal bid for UK
security.
During the show’s Weekend Update segment, co-anchor Colin Jost delivered a
sharp jab while covering international affairs. Referring to a proposed trade
agreement between the U.S. and the U.K., Jost said, “President [Donald] Trump
also announced a new trade deal with the UK that will reopen British markets
for American companies. All that Britain demands in return is that we keep
these two,” as a photo of Harry and Meghan appeared on screen. The quip
sparked laughter from the live audience, with Jost barely keeping a straight
face.
The timing of the gag was especially pointed, coming amid reports that the
Duke and Duchess of Sussex are seeking to mend ties with the royal family.
Prince Harry had recently expressed disappointment over the court’s final
decision to deny him taxpayer-funded security while in the UK, calling it a
“good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up” in an emotional interview.
Harry, who claimed he couldn’t envision returning to Britain with his family
under current circumstances, also said he remained open to
reconciliation—despite acknowledging that “some members will never forgive”
him.
The SNL moment captured growing public fatigue and satire surrounding the
Sussexes’ ongoing royal fallout, serving up humour in the midst of the
couple’s continued efforts to reshape their relationship with the monarchy and
the public.
