Monarch acknowledges Canada’s leadership transition with private note
King Charles has sent a personal letter following an important meeting at
Buckingham Palace, marking a significant moment in Canada’s political
landscape.
Earlier this week, the King, who serves as Canada’s head of state, welcomed
senior officers from the Canadian Parliament for a private discussion on key
national and international affairs. Days later, it was revealed that newly
appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney received a private letter from the
monarch, though its contents remain undisclosed.
On Friday, Carney swore allegiance to the King during a ceremony in Ottawa,
where he paid tribute to Canada’s “proud British heritage.” The former
governor of the Bank of England assumed office following Justin Trudeau’s
resignation in January.
During his speech, Carney highlighted Canada’s diverse roots, stating, “The
ceremony we just witnessed reflects the wonder of a country built on the
bedrock of three peoples: Indigenous, French, and British.”
The King’s meeting at Buckingham Palace lasted approximately 30 minutes and
included the reception of the Usher of the Black Rod of the Senate of Canada,
a position dating back nearly 600 years. As part of the visit, the Usher was
presented with a new ceremonial sword, further symbolising the deep ties
between Canada and the Crown.
